iOS 18 brings major updates to core iPhone apps, including Messages, Photos, and Maps, but arguably one of the most useful improvements comes to your iPhone's built-in calculator.
Previously, the Calculator app was just a calculator (albeit a basic, scientific one), but in iOS 18, it also works as a conversion tool for converting units and currencies, which should make questions like “can I afford to spend €100 on these shoes?” easier to answer.
If, for example, you want to know what five British pounds is equivalent to in US dollars, you simply enter the number 5 into the number field (as if you were entering a mathematical sum), tap the calculator icon in the bottom left corner of the screen, select the Convert button, and then choose the currency of your choice. And voila! You now know that £5 is too much to spend on a Blank Street Coffee Matcha Iced Latte (even if you don’t have any cash). are in London).
To convert units, tap on the currency acronym and then scroll until you find the desired unit. Repeat that step for the lower figure and you're done.

By the way, the Calculator app now also includes a button for Math Notes (which in the UK is respectfully called Maths Notes), which lets you type equations, assign variables, plot graphs, and draw diagrams. Your iPhone will solve such equations online when you type or enter an equal sign, so in addition to being a currency converter for your pocket, the iPhone Calculator is also a useful homework companion in iOS 18.
