Reolink is giving us a good idea of how the smart home is changing in 2024, revealing its new outdoor home security camera that promises to not only offer 180-degree panoramic transmission, but also provide images with minimal distortion, offering better coverage from the outside. space.
The Reolink Duo 3 PoE, a 16MP UHD home security camera, launching during CES 2024 (January 9-12), uses its two lenses and Reolink’s image stitching algorithm to capture two images from angles slightly different and combine those two images. to produce a panoramic image with minimal deformation.
While it’s not exactly a new technique and Reolink has yet to share details on how its stitching technology works, most home security cameras and video doorbells suffer from what’s known as the fisheye effect, a unfortunate result of its attempt to Offer a wider view to provide as much coverage of your space as possible. This doesn’t necessarily have a big impact on your overall security, but it still degrades image quality at the edges.
What Reolink is trying to do here is ensure that you get a clear, crisp image at all times, which can be helpful, especially if there is an incident at your home and you need to provide video evidence to the police.
A security camera like any other
Although it captures images unlike other home security cameras, the Reolink Duo 3 PoE still comes with all the necessary bells and whistles to ensure your safety. It includes motion detection and tracking, alerts, application support and full color night mode, made possible thanks to its eight built-in spotlights. We’re told it also works with Alexa and Google Assistant, although we’re still confirming the details of how you can control it with these voice assistants.
A curious feature that it comes with and that would be difficult to see in other models is that it is capable of “presenting the trajectory of the detected person for a convenient preview by overlaying the person’s movements over time in a single image” to give users a general snapshot of an event. How exactly it works and what benefits it has for your home security will have to wait until we get our hands on a unit to test it out.
However, because it is a PoE (Power over Ethernet) camera, you need to connect it to a PoE injector via a network cable. The good news is that it does not require professional installation, meaning you can set it up yourself. If you prefer a wire-free experience, Reolink will also launch a Wi-Fi battery version, probably later this year.
It’s more affordable than you think
Although its dual-lens setup and 180-degree panoramic capture are a first in the world of smart home security, the Reolink Duo 3 PoE is surprisingly more affordable. At €179.99 / €239.99 (we’re still confirming UK pricing), it’s more affordable than the Arlo Pro 5S and Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, two of the best home security cameras on the market.
The Duo 3 PoE is scheduled to launch on February 21, 2024 and will be available in the US, UK and Europe.
