There can't be many people who haven't seen at least one video of Boston Dynamics' robot dog Spot performing tricks like climbing up and down stairs, spinning, dancing, jumping, and carrying objects. However, the robot is not just for fun. It can be used for a variety of work tasks, such as inspecting industrial sites and performing hazardous tasks.
However, Spot isn't the only industrial robot animal in town right now. He has competition from an unexpected source: Lenovo.
Wisely, the Chinese manufacturer doesn't call its creation a dog and added an extra pair of legs to further distance itself from Boston Dynamics' canine robots, but it's hard not to make comparisons.
Are six legs better than four?
Lenovo Daystar Bot GS, known as “Legged Robot Solution for Inspection,” can be seen in all its glory on the IF Design site.
The accompanying details read: “Step into the cutting edge of industrial automation and utilities with Lenovo Daystar Bot GS. The innovative six-legged design ensures unmatched stability and maneuverability that surpasses traditional robotic platforms, allowing it to traverse diverse terrain with ease.”
Daystar Bot GS is aimed at commercial, industrial, government and public sector, and Asia will be Lenovo's main market when it launches later this year.
Lenovo adds: “With an advanced control system, cutting-edge perception algorithms, and robust IP66 protection, GS performs excellently in unforeseen scenarios, enabling comprehensive data collection anywhere, anytime. In our unwavering pursuit of excellence, GS is a testament to innovation, efficiency, safety and the limitless potential of automated scanning.”
The big question we currently have no answer to is who would win in a fight (or race): Spot or GS?
