We got our first proper look at the Samsung Galaxy Ring at the MWC 2024 show this week, but we don't have all the details on the upcoming wearable yet. Now Samsung executive Hon Pak has revealed a little more regarding smartphone compatibility.
As reported by CNET, Pak revealed that Samsung was working on making the Galaxy Ring compatible with a wide range of Android phones, beyond Samsung's own Galaxy series, as it will of course be compatible with phones like the Samsung Galaxy S24 ready to use.
iPhone owners will be out of luck, however, because Samsung has no plans to make the Galaxy Ring compatible with Apple phones, in line with the decision it previously made with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6.
“Ultimately, we hope our devices will be of such a caliber that people will be willing to switch,” Pak said, although it seems more likely that iPhone owners will opt for the Oura smart ring or wait for Apple's own effort.
Sizes matter
Another tidbit from the CNET article is that the Galaxy Ring's battery capacity changes with different sizes (there are currently nine sizes in total). That doesn't tell us much about battery life, but it seems that some variants of the Galaxy Ring may perform better than others in this department.
Keep in mind that we're still in a relatively early stage with the Galaxy Ring – Samsung made it clear at MWC 2024 that the models on display were still prototypes. There's no official word yet on a date for a full release, although July seems likely.
In our hands-on time with the Galaxy Ring, we heard that sleep tracking would be one of the main features the wearable device offers, and Samsung wants to appeal to people who want a lightweight, simple, screen-free way to track their sleep.
Of course, any data collected by the smart ring will be accessible through an accompanying app, although it appears not on the iPhone. In the coming months we should get all the details about Samsung's new product, including the most important prices at which it will be sold.
