The PlayStation 5 Pro hasn't even hit stores yet, but that doesn't mean there isn't speculation about a possible PlayStation 6. Following reports that AMD will be designing the console's chip, the latest rumors indicate the PS6 could come in two different variants.
The information comes from user 'Kepler' on gaming forum Neogaf, who claims that Sony is developing two separate systems-on-chips (SoCs) for the next generation of consoles. If you're not aware, a SoC is an integrated chip typically used in gaming consoles that combines the function of many computing components, such as the CPU, GPU, and RAM.
If true, the development of two SoCs would suggest that several different versions of the PS6 are in development. The leaker says they don't know why the chips are being made, though they speculate that it could be for a cheaper model of the system. This would mean that the PS6 lineup could be remarkably similar to Microsoft's current console offering, which includes the Xbox Series X and the lower-specced, but significantly less expensive, Xbox Series S.
Considering that analysts estimate the PS6 will cost around $600, a lower-cost model could be very welcome. There's also the possibility that the second SoC is being developed for a portable gaming console, perhaps something along the lines of the Steam Deck.
While ‘Kepler’ has provided some accurate leaks in the past, especially when it comes to the world of PC graphics cards, it’s worth keeping in mind that this is far from an official confirmation. It’s also pretty unlikely that we’ll hear anything from Sony about the PS6 until the upcoming PS5 Pro is definitely in the rearview mirror.
