Paul Feig… we need to talk. bridesmaids was legendary, a simple favor was strong, another simple favor It was fun, but new movie. the maid? Where have things gone wrong?
The director's outlandish comedic vision hasn't been without its hiccups over the years, but I don't think it jibes with the maid. Adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Freida McFadden, the film follows the enigmatic Millie (Sydney Sweeney), who has just accepted a job as a live-in nanny in the home of the wealthy Winchester. While her husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar) seems like a breath of fresh air, the derailed Nina (Amanda Seyfriend) is much harder to handle.
How The Housemaid Went From Acclaimed Mystery to Cinematic Disaster
Look
As I have already mentioned, the biggest problem in the maid it is the story itself or, more specifically, how the original story has been interpreted. The casting contrasts greatly with the way the characters are painted in the book (Millie is more demure and innocent than Sweeney's version, for example), and there is a much greater emphasis on the shock factor.
In short, we lose the beautiful subtleties of an unfolding crime novel in favor of high-impact twists and turns that don't always pay off. If you're not a fan of blood, you'll need to bring a pillow to hide behind. by the time the maid comes to an end, competes The substance in terms of bloodshed and body horror, just in a much softer setting.
For the most part, the movie has the same pacing as the novel, it's just that there's another problem even when it behaves. Scenes that should be serious and thoughtful become so ridiculous that you're suppressing laughter so the people you're watching with don't think you're a sociopath.
While that won't please everyone, it got me excited to laugh out loud at the most absurd things. From the dialogue (Sweeney has a 30-second monologue about a mischievous Troll doll that he delivers with all the sincerity of being on his metaphorical deathbed) to the physical movement (some of Andrew's scenes are a one-shot laugh, let's put it that way), there's something to laugh inappropriately at every few minutes.
It almost becomes a game: can you and your friends first try not to laugh while Amanda Seyfried throws priceless plates around her kitchen?
The performances are standard for a mediocre film, but the entertainment value varies.
I've been a true Amanda Seyfried since My mother!and has consistently delivered dazzling performances throughout the two decades since. Frankly, she has earned the right to have fun making a non-serious movie in which she can be a pantomime villain.
if you think about the maid This way, Seyfried does the least amount of damage. Brandon Sklenar, however, is in his acting element. Just in the last two years, we've seen it in equally questionable films like Drop and Finish with usand she fleshes out her morally bankrupt husband Andrew with almost no effort. The man knows the landscape and isn't afraid to deliver a truly terrible script with a completely deadpan delivery.
I hate to say it, but Sweeney is the biggest problem I have with the cast. At no point do I buy into her double-edged personality as a maid and stowaway criminal, and her romantic chemistry with Sklenar is non-existent. Where your natural style works Euphoria and Anyone but youIt's not like that here.
Millie is a character you could root for, but it's a frustrating job. In real life, you would have told Nina to quit her stupid maid job where the sun doesn't shine, get out of her minimalist mansion, and maybe find some art objects along the way. I know why Millie puts up with her unhealthy situation, but she's not making the best decisions.
If you choose to watch the maid This Christmas, let it be known that a) it's not a Christmas movie, and b) it's perhaps the most painful gift you could give yourself. Stick with the involuntary laughter, but be prepared for anything in between.
