- Recently a massive ddos attack was recently detected during an important NHL event.
- The attack grew from 67 Gbps to almost 1 tbps in twenty minutes
- UDP, SYN, IP and TCP Multivector Strike Flood Techniques used
The cybersecurity firm QRator Labs has claimed that it successfully mitigated the largest ddos attack recorded so far in 2025.
The April 3 attack went to an online betting organization, which lasted about 90 minutes, starting at 11:15 with an increase of 67 Gbps, before increasing abruptly to 217 Gbps at 11:23, and reached its maximum point at 1 Tbps at 965 Gbps at 11:36.
The activity then slowly decreased to 549 Gbps at 12:41, with the attack that ended shortly after. The DDOS attack was a multivector nature, with a peak of 965 Gbps in the flood of UDP, 229 Gbps in Syn Flood, 214 Gbps in IP flooding and 169GBP in TCP flood.
Sporting events are important objectives
Qratator points out that the attack occurred on the same day that the NHL star Alexander Ovechkin scored his 892º goal, drawing the long data record of Wayne Gretzky. Ovechkin's achievement was probably the trigger for the attack, since the online betting sector is especially vulnerable during the main sporting events.
A similar attack pattern was detected during the UEFA European Soccer Championship of 2024, held in Germany, where the Picos in the DDOS activity also went to online betting sites.
“This new incident is a clear reminder that the main specific events of the industry can be exploited by malicious actors. Companies that work with them, such as online betting platforms, must prepare beforehand to defend their digital infrastructure when attention is in its peak,” said Andrey Leskin, director of Technology at Qrator Labs.
With the great sporting moments that attract the mass public online, betting platforms continue to be a main objective for coordinated attacks like this.
Other notable sporting events that will take place this year, which could be an objective for similar attacks of DDOS, include the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States and the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo.
