The rumored Google Pixel Fold 2 could sport a significantly different design than its predecessor by ditching the camera hood and potentially taking the phone in a new direction.
This is based on alleged renders of the next-gen Pixel Fold shared by a reliable leaker @OnLeaks In collaboration with smart awardthat sports a new design that continues with supposed photos of a Pixel Fold 2 prototype which appeared earlier this month. Please note that it is unclear whether these renders are official ones that were leaked from Google or were created based on previous CAD information.
If these renderings are accurate, then Google may be swapping out its established horizontal camera layout for a raised, curved, and slightly rectangular camera island. This new design features two elliptical-shaped bars stacked vertically, housing what appear to be three cameras; the third circle is probably a focus sensor, but could also be a temperature sensor like the Google Pixel 8 Pro.

Google introduced the eye-catching camera hood design with the Google Pixel 6 in 2021. And since then, all subsequent Pixel phones have used that camera design.
However, according to Overleaks and smart award, more design changes are coming. The inner camera is angled to adopt a cut-out design rather than sitting in the bezel like that of the Google Pixel Fold. But its location seems not to have changed too much and is still located in the top right corner of the screen.
Aside from the camera upgrades, the render points to a slimmer, sleeker phone with reduced bezels. This would be a welcome upgrade from the original Pixel Fold, which stood out for its thick bezels. The Fold 2 is also expected to be larger than its predecessor, as according to Smarprix, the phone measures approximately 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.27mm when unfolded. It could also have a more square shape when deployed and a larger cover display, which is expected to grow from 5.8 to 6.4 inches.
Family design
As mentioned, the renders look similar to a previous leak from the Pixel Fold 2 prototype. Both the previous leak and new renders of the Pixel Fold 2 show the carbon version, a departure from Google's typical vibrant options. However, the final version is expected to offer a brighter color range.
The release date of the Google Pixel Fold 2 is yet to be confirmed, but the phone could be announced at Google I/O 2024, which is believed to be held in early May as in previous years. However, the same source previously said that the Pixel Fold 2 could Launching at the same time as the Google Pixel 9.which is not expected until October 2024.
While some will be sad to see the Pixel Fold 2 potentially do away with the unique Pixel visor, this new design could provide a seamless transition when zooming and switching between sensors due to its proximity. It is currently unknown if this new design is exclusive only to the Pixel Fold series or if it represents a new look for all Google Pixel phones. However, due to Google's firm adherence to design uniformity, the Pixel Fold 2 prototype design could represent a new look for future Pixel phones.
