Google's upcoming Pixel 9 series is set to receive a much-needed upgrade: a better fingerprint scanner.
According to a source familiar with the matter, Android Authority reports that the smartphone line will feature the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 ultrasonic fingerprint scanner at launch. That’s the same component that powers fingerprint unlocking and authentication on Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra.
To understand the magnitude of this improvement, you first have to understand the current state of affairs with Pixel smartphones. To put it mildly, users don't like the optical fingerprint scanner that Google's hardware sports. Reddit threads dating back several years can be found, where people constantly complain about the feature's poor performance. One person called it “useless,” while another wondered if there was something wrong with their fingers.
Android Authority explains that optical scanners aren't very good. They're slow, often inaccurate, and sensitive to moisture and dirt. Dirty fingerprints can damage the sensor. Plus, the technology doesn't work well in low-light environments.
According to the publication, “Optical scanners require the display to emit a very bright light. If you don’t completely cover the “circle on the screen,” you just get a blinding light. It’s part of the reason why many smartphone makers have left optical sensors behind.
Ultrasonic enhancements
On the other hand, ultrasonic scanners are much better. True to its name, the technology works by “sending pulses of ultrasonic sound waves from the transducer to the finger.” This allows the hardware to capture the echo as it bounces back, allowing the sensor to be faster and more reliable than older technology.
Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 adds its own twist by creating a “highly accurate image” of a person’s fingerprints, pores, and everything else. It highlights all the unique features found in a user’s prints, making the technology more secure than optical scanners. 3D Sonic even offers “high performance across a wide range of operating conditions.” It doesn’t matter if your fingers are dry or wet or have some dirt on them. The ultrasonic scanner works no matter what.
The report claims that all Pixel 9 variants will have the new component, except for the upcoming Pixel Fold 2, which will keep the sensor in the power button.
Google is planning to hold an event on August 13, during which we expect to see a wide variety of Pixel devices, from smartphones to smartwatches, and perhaps a new pair of Pixel Buds. We highly recommend staying tuned for coverage when the big event arrives.
