Obsidian Entertainment, the developer behind the upcoming RPG Avowed is working to improve the upcoming RPG's combat based on player feedback from January's Xbox Developer Direct. At the time of that reveal, the game's combat was criticized for seeming a little listless in its combat.
In an interview with TechRadar Gaming, Declared Senior game engineer Gabriel Paramo explained that the Developer Direct presentation was “really great” for the team, as it allowed them to learn exactly what needed to be improved for the game.
“When feedback from players is like, 'Oh, this doesn't look very good,' you think, okay, we have to prioritize that polish, right away. So we jumped on that,” he explains of how fans reacted to the combat.
“We focused a lot on the hit reactions on the creatures and started to focus frame by frame. For example, what is the time delay between the player swinging their weapon and the moment it hits so that it really feels much more agile.
“AND [we] He really focused on the extreme poses in the opening frame of the hit reaction animations, and then also really honed in on the impact of the blood and looking at where that placement comes from. Makes sense? “Maybe we should push it a little further so that the player really notices that there are impact effects that come from these things.”
Paramo also explains that while players haven't seen most of the changes yet, Obsidian is also working to improve “every aspect of the animation,” including visual effects and auditory feedback.
Declared It currently has no release date attached, but Obsidian is aiming for a '2024' release window, so players should expect it to launch on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC before the year is out. It will also arrive on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
