According to rumors, it is testing new Snapdragon XR2 Gen 3 and XR2+ Gen 3 chipsets, as well as lending them to headphone makers. The XR2 Gen 3 would be an upgrade to the chip that powers the Meta Quest 3, but the XR2+ Gen 3 rumor is perhaps more interesting because we haven't seen any XR2+ Gen 2 models in action yet. Maybe we never will.
Well, well, we'll probably see some XR2+ Gen 2 powered models launch later this year. But some of the heavy hitters, like the aforementioned Samsung update; Especially since we haven't heard much about many of these XR2+ Gen 2 headphones since their brief announcement.
It's true that improved technology is always on the horizon and headphone manufacturers can't wait forever for innovation to stop before they can release their devices. But one of the reasons for waiting until the Gen 3 is ready is that it's apparently a much more significant step up from the XR2+ Gen 2 compared to the Gen 1; The Gen 3 reportedly offers support for up to 16GB of LPDDR5X and Oryon RAM. A necessary update
That 16GB of RAM figure is notable because it would seemingly bring the XR2+ Gen 3 headphones more in line with the processing power of the Apple Vision Pro, which also has 16GB of RAM, which is currently the best in terms of performance. As such, headphone makers may have been upfront with Qualcomm in letting them know that the XR2+ Gen 2 simply isn't the powerhouse they need and that a new model is needed as soon as possible.
As with all leaks, we should take these XR2+ Gen 3 details with a pinch of salt. Until we officially see the Gen 3, who knows when or if it will be on the way soon. Furthermore, even if the Gen 3 is being tested right now, there are many reasons why we won't see it for several years, such as manufacturing difficulties that need to be overcome.
But with some leaks teasing that something is on the way, we wouldn't be surprised if this Gen 3 XR2+ chipset arrives much sooner than we expected. We'll have to wait and see.
