CES 2024 is a veritable hotbed of exciting smart home developments, and chief among them are Samsung’s latest announcements, which demonstrate a strong focus on improving the smart home user experience.
While Matter is already doing much of the legwork to consolidate and simplify the smart home experience, all the different ecosystems are plagued with friction and clunky processes.
To counter some of these challenges, Samsung has introduced three new developments: an enhanced TV smart home hub experience that can serve to “eliminate” the need for a standalone hub; a new Map View feature for smart home management; and shared access to the QR code. With these latest features, SmartThings is poised to deliver a revitalized, more user-friendly experience.
A truly smart TV
The living room is the beating heart of the home, and thanks to SmartThings’ new TV-centric smart home experience, some of the best TVs can also be the heart of your smart home, transforming your TV into a control center perfect for connected smart devices. home devices and completely eliminate separate smart hubs.
Its new Quick Panel lets you quickly access core features without compromising your favorite TV shows and movies, including device management, viewing cameras, and helping you find lost cell phones around the house by calling them.
A similar experience is reflected in the main TV hub, which will now present key information and insights about your connected devices at a glance. Speaking of doorbells, the new SmartThings experience for TV will also allow TVs to connect to smartphones, allowing users to use their portable devices as secondary remote controls.
Map it
Another feature coming to SmartThings is the new Map View, which can be synced between mobile phones, tablets, TVs and refrigerators, and aims to offer greater smart home control and therefore easier home management intelligent.
Using a TV or mobile phone, users will now be able to use Map View to monitor energy usage, security cameras, room temperature and other data in real time. Map View can integrate real floor plans or use new artificial intelligence technology to create a 3D layout of users’ homes. If your home design is freely available online, it’s as simple as entering your address and watching it work. Magic.
The fun of AI doesn’t end there; Users can also create new AI characters representing household members and even pets, which will respond to the conditions in their home.
LiDAR-enabled devices like the Samsung Jet Bot robot vacuum cleaner or the one just demonstrated Ballie AI will also be able to scan the house and create floor plans, and Ballie will even identify and place compatible devices in the correct position on the map.
The latest of Samsung’s new developments is its new QR code sharing access feature, which will allow users to create custom QR codes that grant access to devices in the home and create their personalized routines. These can be configured to limit device control to specific times, and each QR code can only be used once to prevent bad actors from meddling with your smart home devices.
