We're entering the era of AI-powered smartphones, and Google and Apple in particular have launched or announced a slew of AI features in recent months. Samsung also offers quite a few AI tools, but so far its own digital assistant, Bixby, hasn't received an AI update.
However, that looks set to change soon, as CNBC reports that Samsung will be releasing an improved version of Bixby based on its own AI models this year. The site received this information directly from TM Roh (the head of Samsung’s mobile division), so you can take it as confirmed.
Unfortunately, Roh wasn't more specific about when exactly this AI update will roll out to Bixby, but with less than half of the year left, we shouldn't expect too much.
An intelligent conversational assistant
Roh also didn't say exactly what improvements this Bixby-focused AI overhaul will bring, but based on what we're seeing from other AI-powered assistants, we have a good idea of what to expect.
For one, this update will likely make Bixby more conversational, so that it can keep track of lengthy interactions with multiple questions and follow-ups. This update may also allow Bixby to perform more complex tasks, such as those that require it to interact with multiple apps.
So this update should be appreciated by Bixby fans, although Samsung also told CNBC that it will continue to allow alternative options on its phones, such as Google Assistant, so if you're not a fan of Bixby, you'll still have options.
That said, even in its current form, Bixby might be worth giving a second chance. In a recent test, we found that Bixby outperformed both Siri and Gemini — and that was before this AI update that will hopefully make it even better.
