Samsung has two new foldable phones on the market: the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, but it looks like there are even more form factors on the way, according to Samsung executive Chung Yi.
Speaking at the iMid 2024 conference (via PhoneArena), Yi said that “various products with different form factors, such as dual-foldable, multi-foldable, and rollable” are currently in development at Samsung.
While no timetable has been set for the launch of these devices, considering that Samsung has pioneered the foldable phone format, it is likely that it will be one of the first to market with these other designs as well.
However, it looks like Huawei will be the first to release a dual-folding phone (or triple-folding, depending on whether you count the hinges or the display panels) – it has a phone apparently coming out next month.
A long way to go
This news won't really come as a surprise to seasoned Samsung fans, especially since the company has a strong track record of testing innovations and ideas before they are adopted by the general public – foldable phones being one example.
We've already seen demonstrations of rollable displays from Samsung Display, so we know the technology is in development. The question is how quickly it can be made ready for mass production at a price that isn't exorbitant.
Previous rumors have suggested we could see a rollable phone as early as 2025, and while that may seem a little optimistic as we head into the final third of 2024, these displays have been in development for several years.
Meanwhile, other phone makers have yet to commit to the idea of foldable phones. While rumors of a foldable iPhone keep popping up from time to time, it doesn't look like Apple will be moving away from the standard phone format for a while.
