A recent rumor suggests that Samsung will soon launch the world's first triple smartphone, aiming to beat its Chinese rival Huawei.
To offer a little backstory, last November noted industry insider Ross Young on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) claimed that Huawei was working on a triple-folding phone. It was supposed to be released in late 2023, but for some reason (presumably development issues), it was delayed until this year. Now we have another insider piece of information, known as Revegnus in Xstating that not only will Huawei's device come out in the second quarter of 2024, but Samsung will launch its hardware at an earlier date.
What's a little crazy is that the second quarter of any year starts on April 1st. This means that Samsung has about a month and a half at the time of writing to launch its triple phone or it will miss its self-imposed deadline. . Revegnus goes on to say that “from Samsung's perspective,” it cannot afford to lose the “world's first” title.
experimental technology
Is Samsung capable of launching a triple folding phone? Maybe. The tech giant has experimented with this technology before. During CES 2022, they demonstrated several tri-fold concept devices, notably the Flex S. It is a multi-hinged smartphone capable of folding in and out into the shape of the letter “S.” This configuration also appears to be what Huawei is adopting for its hardware. Online reports from early February show that Huawei's phone will open and close in a similar “S” shape.

It is unknown exactly how said screen will work. Tom's Guide in its report talks about a recently discovered Samsung patent that reveals that its phone will have “sensors in the hinges.” These components will allow you to be aware of the status of the screen at all times, making content only appear on screens “in active use.”
Analysis: It pays to be first
Going back to Tom's Guide, they raise an interesting point about how triple mobile devices could have a big impact on the smartphone industry.
Huawei is a huge brand in much of the world. Launching a triple model for the first time would give the company a huge advantage over its rivals by setting a new hardware standard that others will rush to copy. However, Huawei's global reach is limited by the fact that it is prohibited from selling in one of the world's largest markets: the United States. Samsung, on the other hand, is not limited. So even if it fails to be “first in the world,” the tech giant could opt to be first in the US, effectively becoming the new standard.
It is unknown when the next Galaxy Unpacked event will be. Tradition dictates that the next one will be in summer; somewhere “between June and August”, within the second quarter of 2024. There is nothing scheduled for the end of February or March. However, things can always change at the last minute. And on that note, be sure to take this information with a grain of salt because even the best experts are sometimes wrong.
