A new image of what could be GoPro’s long-awaited Max 2 has surfaced online. Leaker Quadro News posted a rather cryptic photo of the action camera featuring the company’s X logo (the platform formerly known as Twitter).
To be honest, it doesn't reveal much, and there are no details on potential specs or features, although a good amount of information can be extrapolated from this single image.
There are a few reasons why people on the internet believe this is the GoPro Max 2. First, the lens housing is circular. If you look at the company's current lineup, they all have a rectangular housing, except for the GoPro Max, which is the exception and has a round ring.
The second reason is the small screen below the lens (at least, that's what it looks like). It's in the same location as the GoPro Max's screen.
It should also be noted that the speaker that was located next to the camera has disappeared, moving the lens to the center and taking up a larger amount of space. It is possible that the GoPro Max 2 will incorporate a larger lens to absorb more light. This, in turn, would make the device better at recording videos in low-light conditions than its predecessor.
Cool design
But undoubtedly the most noticeable change is the prominent fins that run up and down the device. These fins are most likely the brand's “improved cooling solution,” according to NotebookCheck. The GoPro Max has an overheating problem that is fairly well documented
On official forums, you can find posts from people complaining about their devices overheating. One person mentioned that their unit shut off after 30 minutes. Apparently, overheating can occur even if the outside temperature is a chilly 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius).
Fins are an effective way to keep temperatures lower, as their large surface area allows for better heat dissipation. In fact, if you were to open up your computer and look at its heatsink, you'd see individual metal panels that work together to keep the machine cool. The same principle applies here.
As with all leaks, this information should be taken with a grain of salt. Things could change, as GoPro might opt for a different cooling method. We know the camera will eventually be released, as the model's launch was announced for September 2023 at X.
Not much is officially known about the device, other than that it has been delayed until “at least Q4 2024”. So it may be a while before we hear more. In the meantime, check out TechRadar’s list of the best action cameras for 2024.
