Prime Video has released a trailer for music, an upcoming movie about a man who listens to music everywhere he goes, and it will immediately go straight to the top of our must-see list.
Set in New Jersey, music follows the story of a man named Rudy who is “tortured by music.” In the trailer he explains to his love interest: “For as long as I can remember, I turn the usual sounds of every day into rhythm.” This is displayed so vibrantly and colorfully in the trailer, it feels like we're watching a physics-defying musical: some of the set-splicing scenes are reminiscent of Everything everywhere, at the same time.
The film isn't just about Rudy's uncanny talent (or is it a curse?) for constantly reimagining the world around him like a great musical performance, but it's also a coming-of-age story and a love story. Rudy must deal with the various women in his life who are putting different types of pressure on him, whether it's his ex-girlfriend, his mother, or his possible new love interest Isabella (Camila Mendes of riodale). And, of course, there's the star of the trailer: a puppet who appears to act as Rudy's confidant or conscience.
Musica will premiere at SXSW on March 13 and will then be available to stream on April 4 on Prime Video.
Who is Rudy Mancuso?
music It stars Rudy Mancuso, an internet star who rose to fame when he started a Vine channel (a now-closed short video app) in 2013 and then a YouTube channel in 2016.
Since then, he has appeared on television shows, released singles, directed music videos, and much more. Now Rudy not only stars musicbut he directed the film and co-wrote it with writer and producer Dan Lagana.
Fascinatingly, Rudy revealed in a tweet back in 2021 who has synesthesia. He explains that it is “a rare neurological disease in which stimulation of one sense leads to automatic and involuntary experiences in another.” He goes on to explain that his unique style of synesthesia has manifested itself in different ways over the years, but shares, “I embody sounds, I feel shapes, and I see music.”
In 2021, he made a series of videos in which he attempted to create a machine that could physically represent what you see when you listen to and play music. You can find some of the results on YouTube in this video simply titled SYNESTHESIA.
Now he has dreamed music, which appears to be another creative outlet for Mancusco to help visualize and communicate his unique abilities to see and feel the music he listens to. This is probably why the trailer says that music is “a story that is actually true (more or less).” We hope it's good enough to make our list of the best Prime Video movies when it arrives.
