The PlayStation Portal will reportedly be the best-selling accessory in the US in 2024.
The latest from Mat Piscatella, CEO and industry advisor for Circana, via PlayStation Lifestyle, who reports that eight months after its launch, the official PlayStation 5 remote player has continued to sell well in US markets.
In fact, it's doing so well that, according to Circana, the PlayStation Portal was the best-selling accessory in dollar sales both in May and so far this year.
The continued success of the PlayStation Portal follows previous statements from Sony, which previously said sales of its handheld console had exceeded its own expectations.
Earlier this year, PlayStation vice president of product management Hiromi Wakai told Gamefile that PS Portal is a niche product aimed at people with specific needs.
Spending on accessories in May fell 8% compared to a year earlier to $148 million. Spending growth on headphones and earphones of 10% in May compared to a year earlier was offset by a 12% drop in spending on game controllers.July 8, 2024
“From the beginning, PlayStation Portal was intended to be a product more suited to people with specific needs and those who want to play in a specific way, so the reactions after the announcement were very much within our expectations,” Wakai said at the time.
Wakai added that Portal's popularity helps Sony “ship more units consistently” and that “we will continue to bring more units to market.”
The PlayStation Portal was released in November 2023 and quickly sold out in both the US and UK within two days. While the console does not support cloud gaming, it is priced more affordably compared to other portable devices on the market today.
In TechRadar Gaming's five-star review, editor-in-chief Rob Dwiar called the device “a huge success” and a “brilliant evolution in remote play,” saying it offers “a smooth and stable way to play with your PlayStation 5 library in your hands…”
