OpenAI reportedly has one million commercial customers paying for its ChatGPT Enterprise, Team and Education subscriptions, the company said.
The significant growth, starting in September, marks a considerable increase from the 600,000 reported in April, and has been attributed to continued advances in large language models that power conversational generative AI chatbots, including the launch of GPT-4o earlier this summer.
Aside from paid business plans like Team ($25 per month), personal plans like Plus ($20 per month) and the free tier appear to not be included in the above figure.
ChatGPT has one million business customers
According BloombergMany of the company's millions of business users are in the US, although the UK, Germany and Japan also contribute to the overall numbers.
Additionally, OpenAI is reportedly exploring higher pricing for subscriptions that give access to more advanced upcoming LLMs, such as Strawberry and Orion. Early internal conversations suggest prices could reach as high as $2,000 per month, according to an anonymous source familiar with the matter (via The information).
At the lower end of the scale, it is believed that hundreds of millions of users access the free ChatGPT tier each month.
As OpenAI continues to expand its ChatGPT services, more companies are paying more attention. Apple and Nvidia, adding to Microsoft's initial multi-million dollar investment in the startup, are reportedly exploring the possibility of investing in the company.
The latest round of fundraising could see OpenAI reach a valuation of more than $100 billion, up from the $80 billion estimated in February, when the ChatGPT maker planned to sell shares to Thrive Capital.
Despite its occasional boasts, OpenAI remains a largely private company. It is not known exactly how many paying customers the platform has had, or how many users it has attracted to its consumer-oriented subscriptions.
