The OnePlus Open is a fantastic device, which has even earned the top spot on our list of the best foldable phones. And later this month, the smartphone could get even better, as the company has recently introduced the OnePlus Open Apex Edition, which sounds pretty cool.
Its design is largely the same as before, though it will be released in a deep Crimson Shadow red – a colour the company says was inspired by the Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor. Like the box camera, the refreshed model has a silver frame and an orange alert slider. It even has a vegan leather back cover, just like the OnePlus Open in Voyager Black.
Details about the update are scarce at the moment, though we do know there will be some hardware improvements. A company representative told us it will come “with improved storage, AI image editing, and improved battery life.” [tools]and innovative security features.” The product listing also suggests the Apex Edition has more memory.

Possible updates
It's not known exactly what will be added to the foldable. OnePlus is hesitant to reveal anything. If you go to the official website, you'll see the letter “X” next to the RAM and storage options where numbers should be.
That said, we can speculate a bit about what might be coming. AI image editing is reminiscent of the Pixel 8's Magic Editor, which lets you move objects around in a photo. The OnePlus Open already has an AI eraser for removing people and things. Something along the lines of Magic Editor could be the next evolution. As for storage, the Apex Edition could range from 512GB of space all the way up to a full terabyte.
It's hard to imagine what the new amount of memory will be. It seems unlikely that it will reach 32 GB of RAM. Instead, it is possible that it will receive 24 GB of RAM, like the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro, which is sold only in China. If the company does this, the Apex Edition would be one of the first non-Chinese OnePlus phones to house more than 16 GB of memory.
Solid user experience
Aside from those few changes, it doesn’t look like the OnePlus Open Apex Edition is going to be much different from the current model. It will still have the dual AMOLED displays. The chipset isn’t being replaced, and the rear camera array isn’t being upgraded. Don’t be too disappointed. Again, this is a really good foldable phone. At the very least, the user experience is getting better, especially if the editing tools are as good as we think they’ll be.
The Apex version has one slight drawback: it is only guaranteed to receive “three major Android updates and four years of security updates from the time of launch.” The standard phone gets an extra year for both sets of software patches.
There's no word on how much the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will cost at launch, but all will be revealed on August 7. Until then, check out TechRadar's list of the best OnePlus phones for 2024.
