NYT Strands Today (Game #84): The Answers
The answers to today's Strands game number 84 are…
- CEASE
- REFRAIN
- FORGIVE
- FORGET
- SPLIT
- CONQUER
- SPANGRAM: ACTION VERBS
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: Perfect
To be honest, this is a bit strange. There's nothing wrong with the concept: the theme track, 'Two-Step Process', nicely sums up the idea of words that go together, like CEASE and DESIST. But I'm a little puzzled why the spangram is ACTIONVERBS. I mean, yes, they are action verbs, but that's not really the defining quality here. After all, there are hundreds of action verbs, but the reason these have been chosen is because they go together in pairs.
Well, we've already had a Strands conundrum with PAIRED as a spangram, so I can see why the NYT wanted to avoid repeating that, but isn't there a different, more relevant word/phrase that could have been used here? BED MATES or something like that.
Anyway, I managed to figure it out, but there was a lot of trial and error involved. Each word pair was completed essentially the same way: find a half by playing random words until one turned blue, then look for its match and find it very quickly. Frankly, it's not my favorite Strands game.
