NYT Strands today (game #133): the answers
The answers to today's Strands game #133 are…
- CHEERFUL
- WHINNY
- GALE
- FILL
- PEAT
- FURRY
- CRUNCH
- ATOM
- SPANGRAM: HOMOPHONES
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: Perfect
I'm a little confused by this Strands puzzle. At first glance, it's pretty straightforward: the answers are all homophones of names – e.g. GALE is GAIL, FILL is PHIL, PEAT is PETE. But some are marginal at best. HAIRY sounds like HARRY, but isn't actually a homophone. Same with MERRY – MARY? And then there's ATOM, which I don't understand at all. Is it a homophone of ADAM? Of TOM? In fact, I ran every word through the excellent homophone finder Rhymezone, and it provided results for all except WHINNY (which I'm sure is WINNY) and ATOM. I honestly don't know what that one is supposed to be.
Anyway, this was a good Strands puzzle. I always like homophones as a game theme, and this one was challenging without being impossible. More of this, please.
