NYT Connections Today (Game #371): The Answers
The answers to today's Connections game #371 are…
- YELLOW: CURRENT SITUATION CONDITION, FORM, FORM, STATE
- GREEN: REMOTE RURAL AREA SHRUBS, COUNTRY, STICKS, WOODS
- BLUE: CLASSIC LAWN ORNAMENTS FLAMINGO, FOUNTAIN, GNOME, WINDMILL
- PURPLE: ___ STORY FAIRY, FISH, POPULAR, HIGH
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: Three mistakes
I made a real mess of this one, escaping without any further guesswork but in a puzzle that really shouldn't have been that difficult.
Things started bad and quickly got worse; I saw GNOME, FOUNTAIN and FLAMINGO and immediately thought it would have something to do with gardens. So I added FISH, thinking of a pond, and when that was bad, I made things worse by trying BUSH. Stupid stupid stupid.
Then I moved away from that and chose the _TALE group, of FAIRY, FOLK, HIGH, and FISH, but only after inexplicably guessing BUSH again, instead of FISH, and exhausting my third mistake. What is a BUSH TALE? No idea, I don't know why I played it.
With the purple sorted out, things finally became easier and I was able to spot the yellow group, before returning to the garden and adding PINWHEEL to the set. I don't know what a pinwheel is, but I felt like it had to fit, and sure enough it did. That left the green group, which was blindingly obvious by now, and which I really should have spotted earlier. Oh!

What are NYT connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final question since you'll be able to answer it through a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little breathing room.
However, it's a little more complicated than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, be careful with homophones and other puns that could disguise answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
