Today's NYT Connections (Set #473): The Answers
The answers to today's Connections game, number 473, are…
- YELLOW: DECORATIVE BORDER EDGE, RUFFLE, FRINGES, REVERSE
- GREEN: INCREASE, IN A CERTAIN WAY GROW, RISE, SWELL, GROW
- BLUE: SPECIFICATIONS FOR A BARTENDER DRY, CLEAN, STRAIGHT, VIRGIN
- PURPLE: ROPE ___ BEANS, BIKINI, CHEESE, THEORY
- My rating: Moderate
- My rating: Perfect
Give me a group containing CHEESE and I guarantee I'll figure it out. It doesn't matter what the connection is: if it involves cheese, I'm up for the challenge. And so it was today with STRING ___, the most difficult purple group, which I got with my first guess, seeing that CHEESE, THEORY, BEANS and BIKINI could all go after STRING.
I've rated this Connections puzzle as moderate rather than easy, because despite not making any mistakes, I did have to think quite a bit about the other three groups. Maybe I played a little more conservatively than I sometimes do, but I stared and stared and stared at the board for what seemed like an hour (but was probably about five minutes) before I saw the yellow DECORATIVE EDGE group, and then a little longer before I got SPECIFICATIONS FOR A BARTENDER.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The plus side is that you don't technically need to solve the last one, as you'll be able to answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of wiggle room.
However, it is a bit more complex than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trick you with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other wordplay that could disguise the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
