Today's NYT Connections (Set #431): The Answers
The answers to today's Connections game, number 431, are…
- YELLOW: WIDTH EXTENSION, SCOPE, EXTENT, SCOPE OF APPLICATION
- GREEN: THE OTHER HALF COMPLEMENT, PARTY, TOGETHER, PARTNER
- BLUE: BEERS, FAMILY BUD, NATTY, SIERRA, STELLA
- PURPLE: WORDS AFTER “PAY” CHECK, DIRT, PAL, PHONE
- My rating: Moderate
- My rating: 1 error
Distraction is a constant threat in Connections, which is one of the reasons I always shuffle answers as soon as I start the game; the NYT tends to put words next to each other at first to make it seem like they belong together, when they don't.
Today, I guessed MATE, BUD, PAL, PARTNER as a group and was quite surprised when they didn't form a single answer. But, as it usually happens, MATE and PARTNER were part of the “Other half” group (with COMPLEMENT and MATCH), while BUD was in “Beers” and PAL in the final group “Words after “Pay””.
Anyway, you can make three mistakes in Connections (the fourth one triggers a loss), so I was left with enough guesswork to figure out this relatively complicated installment of the game. I don't think I would have gotten the blue group if it wasn't the default (I'd never heard of NATTY or SIERRA as beers), but the purple one wasn't as bad as it sometimes is, so I got it in the end.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The plus side is that you don't technically need to solve the last one, as you'll be able to answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of wiggle room.
However, it is a bit more complex than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trick you with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other wordplay that could disguise the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
