Today's NYT Connections (Set #455): The Answers
The answers to today's Connections game, number 455, are…
- YELLOW: VERBS IN A CAKE RECIPE BAKE, WHIP, FREEZE, PREHEAT
- GREEN: WHAT A HEART DOES WHEN IT IS EXCITED HIT, PUMP, RUN, PALPITAR
- BLUE: ECCLESIASTICAL TITLES BISHOP, PASTOR, POPE, PRIOR
- PURPLE: ___ CHILDREN BAD, BEACH, HARDY, PET STORE
- My rating: Moderate
- My rating: 2 mistakes
Today’s connections puzzle is rife with disorientation. Virtually every group had another answer that could have gone there, and there were several other possible connections that turned out to be dead ends. Take BEAT, BAKE, FROST, PREHEAT (which ultimately made up the easiest group in yellow), VERBS IN A CAKE RECIPE: POUND: POUND could also have been a recipe word, and I tried that with several other combinations before getting the quartet right. And similarly, the group WHAT A HEART DOES WHEN (green) could easily have included BEAT if it were just WHAT A HEART DOES.
Fortunately, purple was a relatively easy color. [blank] Current format; as soon as I saw PET SHOP I thought of “GUYS” and it wasn't hard to identify BEACH, HARDY and BAD to form that group. Same with the blue group ECCLESIASTICAL TITLES. So overall it's not too difficult, but it's far from a piece of cake (even though cakes were one of the themes).

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The plus side is that you don't technically need to solve the last one, as you'll be able to answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of wiggle room.
However, it is a bit more complex than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trick you with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other wordplay that could disguise the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
