Today's NYT Connections (Set #461): The Answers
The answers to today's Connections game, number 461, are…
- YELLOW: WINE BOTTLE INFORMATION GRAPE, REGION, HARVEST, WINERY
- GREEN: CONSOLE INPUTS BUTTON, KNOB, SLIDER, SWITCH
- BLUE: PREFIXES PRO, RETRO, SUB, SUPER
- PURPLE: ___ KING HAMBURGER, CALIFORNIA, LEON, GRADUATION PARTY
- My rating: Easy
- My rating: 2 mistakes
Today's Connections group is pretty straightforward. To start with, it doesn't require too much specialized knowledge: BUTTON, KNOB, SLIDER, and SWITCH, for example, are all commonly used words. And while the WINE BOTTLE INFO group may be easier for wine drinkers, none of the answers are remotely complicated.
The one I technically didn't solve was the blue one, which in retrospect was one of the easier ones. That group was PREFIXES, with the answers PRO, SUB, RETRO, and SUPER, all of which really should have occurred to me. But instead, I focused on the [blank] king group, having seen BURGER, LION and PROM. Problem was I couldn't find the fourth, I guessed SUPER and PRO (randomly) before finally choosing CALIFORNIA to complete the set. I don't know what a CALIFORNIA KING is, but I figured it out in the end, so who cares…

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The plus side is that you don't technically need to solve the last one, as you'll be able to answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of wiggle room.
However, it is a bit more complex than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trick you with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other wordplay that could disguise the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
