Today's NYT Connections (Set #456): The Answers
The answers to today's Connections game, number 456, are…
- YELLOW: GET RED IN THE FACE BLUSH, BURNING, BLUSHING, SHINE
- GREEN: CONTINUOUS CONSECUTIVE, WITHOUT STOPS, SOLID, STRAIGHT
- BLUE: ASSORTMENT OF FLAVORS FLIGHT, PLATE, SAMPLE, TASTING
- PURPLE: COMMUNICATION SITUATIONS FLOURISH, COACH, COMMUNITY, FULL HOUSE
- My rating: Easy
- My rating: 1 error
Luck is always a factor in connections, because unless you're a very well-read reader, you're unlikely to always know all the answers in every category. Today, for example, I could see that PLATE, SAMPLE, and TASTING were all menu types, but I had no idea what the fourth one was. But looking at the remaining possibilities, I went with FLIGHT on intuition and that turned out to be right, giving me the blue ASSORTMENT OF FLAVORS group. I have no idea what “FLIGHT” refers to here, but it didn't matter, because I got it right anyway.
My task was made easier, I admit, by the fact that yellow (GO RED IN THE FACE) and purple (SITUATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS) were pretty easy today. In retrospect, so was green (CONTINUOUS), but sometimes these things aren't obvious until after the fact.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The plus side is that you don't technically need to solve the last one, as you'll be able to answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of wiggle room.
However, it is a bit more complex than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trick you with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other wordplay that could disguise the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
