Today's NYT Connections (Set #418): The Answers
The answers to today's Connections game, number 418, are…
- YELLOW: STRETCHING, LIKE PATIENCE Tension, tax, test, attempt
- GREEN: THINGS A DJ DOES MIX, SAMPLING, SCRATCH, SPIN
- BLUE: ADJECTIVES USED IN GRAMMAR DIRECT, IRREGULAR, POSSESSIVE, PRESENT
- PURPLE: WHAT “GREEN” MIGHT MEAN ECOLOGICAL, JEALOUS, EXUBERANT, NAUSEA
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: 1 error
I spent most of today’s game alternating between racking my brain over what each of the groups (literally, any of them) could possibly be, and then slapping myself on the forehead for their obvious nature once I finally located them. The sheer number of distractions cunningly inserted into the game by the NYT didn’t help: POSSESSIVE and JEALOUS could have easily gone together, as could SAMPLE and TRY and TRY (something scientific perhaps?), or SPIN and TRY and TRY (as in ‘prove it’).
However, none of them were among the actual groups. In the end, I got the grammar one (unsurprisingly, given my career choice) and then moved on to the DJ one. Eventually, I also managed to solve the purple one, although by then I would have gotten it by default anyway. So, all in all, it was a difficult but satisfying installment of Connections.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The plus side is that you don't technically need to solve the last one, as you'll be able to answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of wiggle room.
However, it is a bit more complex than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trick you with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other wordplay that could disguise the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
