Faster, more accurate weather forecasts are about to become a real possibility around the world thanks to a new release from Nvidia.
The computing giant has announced a new digital twin cloud platform that it says will help meteorologists and weather experts create richer, more detailed simulations, and much more.
The new Earth-2 APIs, introduced at Nvidia GTC 2024, can be used to help address the cost of $140 billion in losses worldwide due to extreme weather caused by climate change, and Nvidia says it is now can begin work on an “unprecedented scale.” “.
Whatever the weather
“Climate disasters are now normal: historic droughts, catastrophic hurricanes and generational floods appear in the news with alarming frequency,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “Earth-2 Cloud APIs strive to help us better prepare and inspire us to act to moderate extreme weather.”
Nvidia says the new models will be used by governments and organizations around the world, including Taiwan's Central Meteorological Administration, which aims to use better detection of typhoon landfall, with earlier predictions of such incidents, which means citizens can be evacuated faster.
The Earth-2 Cloud APIs will run on Nvidia DGX Cloud, opening them up to all types of users to create high-resolution simulations.
They use a new generative AI model from Nvidia called CorrDiff that is capable of generating images with a resolution 12.5 times higher than current numerical models, 1,000 times faster and 3,000 times more energy efficient, in addition to correcting inaccuracies of previous models, bringing together multiple sources of information to create much more accurate and focused forecasts.
