We're all set for the big Apple WWDC 2024 event taking place tomorrow, June 10, and a couple of breaking rumors have emerged around iOS 18, hinting at some of the key updates iPhone owners can expect.
Both leaks come from sources speaking to MacRumors, and the first suggests that there will be a new security feature that will allow you to lock individual apps behind Face ID (or Touch ID, or a passcode), in addition to the home screen. close with key.
This is a feature that is already available on a limited basis on the iPhone: you can lock individual entries in Notes, for example, while third-party apps such as WhatsApp and PayPal have also introduced this feature. This protection can also be enabled using a custom shortcut.
However, with iOS 18, the feature will be fully integrated and available for any Apple app (and possibly third-party apps as well) at the operating system level. It's an additional safety net, in case an unwanted visitor manages to access your phone.
Darkening
The second tip MacRumors has picked up relates to dark mode on the iPhone: Apparently, the dark mode that was introduced in 2019 with iOS 13 will be expanded to cover home screen app icons.
We've previously heard about more customization options for home screens and app icons coming with iOS 18, and this is apparently related to that. Right now, dark mode affects the wallpaper on an iPhone's home screen, but not app icons.
Leaks about the changes coming with iOS 18 have become a flurry in recent days, with news about artificial intelligence features under the name Apple Intelligence, updates to the built-in Mail app, new in-app text effects Messages and much more. Everything indicates that this iOS update will be one of the most important so far and should be fully released in September.
All will be revealed on Monday: we will cover the event live and you can watch it live too. The keynote, which includes all the keynote announcements, begins at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST (3am AEST on June 11 for those in Australia).
