According to leaked promotional photos, a new version of the Nest Learning Thermostat could be coming soon. The images indicate that the new smart thermostat will have a similar design to its predecessor, but Google may have switched from a moving dial to a touchscreen.
The images were published by Arsene Lupin on Twitter and shared by 9to5Google. They appear to be leaked promotional materials promoting a new version of the Google Nest temperature sensor, which will be compatible with three Nest thermostats, including the yet-to-be-released Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen).
The new smart thermostat appears to have a rounded glass face rather than a flat one, and the interface appears to have been refined. While the 2020 Nest smart thermostat used a twist and tap/click interface, the redesigned device’s larger glass surface and thinner metal bezel suggest it might have touch controls instead.
In terms of actual functionality, it may not be a huge step up from the 2020 model. An FCC listing released last month suggests its wireless capabilities will be the same, with Soli low-power motion sensing, but it’s hard to say more than that at this point. Matter integration would be one of the more obvious upgrades, particularly for this high-end thermostat, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Hopefully the similarity in design will mean upgrading from the 2020 model will be straightforward, with no additional wiring required.
A long-awaited update
The original Nest Temperature Sensor came out in 2018, so the Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd Gen) was about time.
It looks very similar to its predecessor (a small, circular device to mount on a wall or place on a shelf), and it connects to the Google Home app, where you can set the temperature you want the room to reach at a certain time of day.

We would have liked to see some connected radiator valves, such as those made by Hive, that would allow temperature control in individual rooms, but there is no indication that this will happen.
The Smart Thermostat (4th Gen) and Temperature Sensor (2nd Gen) could launch after the Google Pixel event on August 13. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more.
