If you subscribed to Netflix through the iOS app or iTunes when that was possible, and you've been happily paying and watching through that system for years, Netflix will no longer accept your payments: you'll have to subscribe directly instead of through from Apple. . Netflix has confirmed that it is telling all members who used “an iTunes payment method” to sign up directly, as their existing payment method is no longer supported.
That will be a blow to anyone whose subscription meant they were still paying pre-increase subscription fees: the basic plan that some users were still charged at $9.99 per month has now been cut, so existing subscribers will have to pay. the going rate for the streaming service or drop to the ad-supported service instead.
This isn't a big surprise, because Netflix has already stopped signing up through Apple for new subscribers. And it's part of the current tensions between the streamer and the tech giant, whose relationship isn't exactly friendly.
Why Netflix and Apple are not best friends
Netflix has long criticized Apple for what it sees as cutting too much of in-app purchases, something this move is designed to prevent Netflix from paying for. But there's also the factor that since the launch of Apple TV Plus, the fundamental relationship between the two companies has changed: Apple is not just a platform provider, but a direct competitor as one of the best streaming services.
It may be a much smaller competitor (Apple doesn't publish subscriber numbers, but you can be sure they're a fraction of Netflix's), but that means the two companies have become increasingly adversarial. Netflix will not integrate with the unified Apple TV app and Apple TV hardware interface, and Netflix has not created an app for the Apple Vision Pro either.
If you're currently subscribed to Netflix through Apple, you'll receive an email update at any time telling you to resubscribe through the Netflix site. Your options in the US if you want to keep your streaming service are $15.59 per month ad-free or $7 per month with the ad-supported plan; the Premium tier costs $23 per month.
