Netflix has released a trailer for the new Turkish television series A round of applause, which looks like a strange and original drama that we can't wait to see. We don't have many details about it yet, but Netflix has released this strange and compelling synopsis: “Struggling with existential angst and longing for his past life in an orange, a man navigates his quirky family in this decades-spanning drama.”
The trailer (see below) on its own is a bit enigmatic, but combining it with the synopsis we can assume that we see glimpses of the life of the protagonist Metin, even when he is being born, when he was a child who had his heart broken, like Un adult sits on a stage looking at an audience of people and (we assume) also when he is an orange. Or remember to be an orange? We're not entirely sure how it works.
A round of applause is a Turkish television series (called Kuvvetli Bir Alkis in Turkish), starring actors Aslıhan Gürbüz, Fatih Artman and Cihat Suvarioglu in the lead roles. It is written and directed by Turkish director Berkun Oya, who was behind the 2022 Netflix film. Cici and has won multiple awards for his theater writing and directing over the years.
The first episode will arrive on Netflix on February 29, 2024. We are not sure when the next episode of A round of applause will continue or how many there are in total, but we hope it will be a limited series with only a handful of episodes.
What else does Netflix have in store for 2024?
Netflix has been praised in the past for providing a home for series like A round of applause, the kind of quirky, offbeat TV shows you wouldn't expect to find anywhere else. There are many examples to draw from, but we are thinking of programs like The OA and Maniac, that are cerebral and, in many ways, genre-defying.
Of course, the best streaming service has also been criticized for canceling great shows, even good ones that amassed a huge following, like The OA and Glow. This is because it has been reducing its original production and has been moving into different spaces, such as live televised sporting events and even mobile games.
It has also been expanding its library with more foreign content. For example, earlier this month, the streamer unveiled its new slate of Korean TV shows and movies for 2024, including the highly anticipated second season of Squid Game. It was also revealed in January that Netflix will become the exclusive new home of Japan's Studio Ponoc, which is an up-and-coming new animation house packed with Studio Ghibli talent. But these are, of course, just a snapshot of the different regions Netflix is investing in.
