eBay has announced plans to cut around 1,000 jobs as the company seeks to ensure its “long-term success.”
An announcement from the company's chief executive, Jamie Iannone, confirmed that “approximately 1,000 positions”, or the equivalent of around 9% of the company's full-time workforce, would be eliminated in its effort to achieve greater efficiency of costs.
The e-commerce giant claims to have been on a transformative journey over the past three years since the pandemic, making changes to user experiences and driving customer satisfaction in certain areas that have received investment.
eBay announces large-scale layoffs
Although layoffs continued through 2024, the final weeks of 2022 and the first part of 2023 were considered the most severe. A total of more than 262,000 tech workers were laid off in calendar year 2023 (via layoffs.fyi), with some of the most sizable reductions representing around 10-15% of companies' workforces.
eBay's decision to reduce its workforce by 9% is quite significant, even by 2023 standards; However, it is unclear exactly what percentage of all the company's workers are affected, as the 9% refers only to full-time workers.
The announcement confirmed that, despite continued consumer spending, eBay's spending has become a problem: “our headcount and overhead have outpaced the growth of our business.”
Leaders have been asked to communicate workforce changes directly through eBay's preferred video conferencing platform, Zoom. In an attempt to soften the blow, the company asked all American workers to work from home on January 24 to allow “space and privacy for these conversations.”
TechRadar Pro asked eBay to confirm more details about the layoffs, including any information about a redundancy package to support affected workers. The company did not immediately respond.
