Microsoft has again reminded Windows 11 users who are still running the old version 23H2 that they should upgrade to a newer version of the operating system as support is about to run out.
Yes, it's not just Windows 10 that's about to end support (that's happening tomorrow, in fact), but also Windows 11 23H2, although the support deadline isn't that close for the latter.
As Microsoft makes clear in its release status dashboard (as spotted by Bleeping Computer): “The Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, version 23H2, will continue to receive monthly security updates until November 11, 2025.”
After that, security updates for Windows 11 23H2 will no longer be provided, so if you haven't updated to version 24H2 (or 25H2) yet, you'll need to do so within the next month. (Although it's worth noting that Microsoft has already pushed this update to many people.
This is actually the fourth warning Microsoft has issued this year about ending support for Windows 11 23H2, and it will be the last before the final cumulative update is delivered in November.
Analysis: it's time to take a step
People running Windows 11 23H2 are in the same situation as those on Windows 10, in terms of not having security updates in the future is a bad thing. Without monthly updates to fix security flaws, version 23H2 will become vulnerable to exploits and, as time goes on, potentially more and more avenues of compromise will be left open.
While it's understandable that some people didn't make the jump to 24H2 after learning that it was a particularly buggy update in its early stages, things have calmed down now and of course we've also just finished 25H2. However, you'll need to upgrade to the 24H2 version first before you're offered 25H2, and the latter is a minor update anyway. In fact, both are essentially the same, apart from some small tweaks and the small addition of features with 25H2, but there is nothing worth highlighting, as I have commented before.
In any case, the time has come to get 24H2, although this is only true for Windows 11 Home and Pro. Those with the Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 11 23H2 can keep that version for another year, as they will be supported until November 10, 2026.
For those using Windows 10, it's also worth noting that you can get extended support until October 2026, and you should take advantage of that free offer if you intend to stick with the previous operating system.
