Representatives from MI6 and the CIA have revealed that the agencies have adopted generative AI in the fight to improve intelligence activities.
In a joint opinion pieceAgencies highlighted the “sea of data” they need to analyze to identify and address security threats.
The intelligence chiefs describe “accelerating” challenges brought about by technological advances, with an “unprecedented array of threats” facing the two countries. Both identify the war in Ukraine as the first of its kind to combine open-source warfare with “cutting-edge battlefield technology.” [..] “High and low sophistication cyberwarfare, social networks, open source intelligence”
A special relationship
The move may not come as a huge surprise, as Microsoft has already confirmed it. Designed generative AI models specifically for use by intelligence services. For example, the big data language model developed for data analytics uses an “air gap” to ensure separation from any insecure internet connections.
The article said China's rise to power is the top geopolitical and intelligence challenge of the 21st century for both the CIA and SIS, saying both have reorganized their services to reflect the new priority.
This change of direction is supported by foreign policy measures, particularly those of the United States. Impose restrictions that aim to curb China's technological power.
As cyberattacks from both Russia and China have become more frequent threats, bosses confirm the strategy, noting: “We are training AI to help us protect and running a ‘red team’ in our own operations to ensure we can remain secret when needed. We are using cloud technologies so our brilliant data scientists can make the most of our data, and we are partnering with the most innovative companies in the US, UK and around the world.”
The association, of course, does not confirm the exact uses of its AI algorithms or operations, but it is clear that the technology will play a crucial role in intelligence and public policy in the future.
