Altán networks, América Móvil, AT&T Mexico and Telefónica Mexico announced the local deployment of the initiative and its potential for new commercial and industry associations.
May 28, 2025, Mexico City: During GSMA M360 Latam, which began today, Altán Networks, América Móvil, AT&T México and Telefónica Mexico announced the launch of GSMA Open Gateway in the country. This global initiative led by the GSMA allows mobile operators to open their networks to boost innovation and collaboration throughout the digital ecosystem.
GSMA Open Gateway is a standard through which mobile operators provide developers accessing a range of network functions used to create applications and services. By gathering operators around the world, the initiative facilitates the design of digital products that can work without problems in all devices, regardless of the country or operator. This is achieved through unique access points, known as application programming interfaces (API), which serve as a bond doors to information about the network capabilities.
These APIs are available through the camera repository, an open source project of GSMA and the Linux Foundation, which developers can access to integrate them directly into their applications. In this way, GSMA Open Gateway simplifies and accelerates the developer's innovation while helping to create a softer and safer experience for mobile users.
Globally, the first phase of GSMA Open Gateway has focused on APIs aimed at digital security. In line with this trend, the three API presented in Mexico are:
- SIM exchangewhich allows the verification of the replacements of the SIM card in a mobile line;
- Device locationwhich provides information on the location of a device;
- Verification of numbersthat verifies if a telephone number is associated with a specific device.
By providing key information in real time, these APIs help detect and prevent fraud in financial payments and transactions. For example, they can identify suspicious changes in a customer's mobile line just before a significant money transfer, offering greater user security. This is the reason why sectors such as Banking and Fintech are among the first potential clients of this new business line for operators.
“In Altán Renes, we understand that connectivity has its greatest value when it allows innovation. GSMA Open Gateway represents that evolution precisely: a common infrastructure that allows mobile operators to transform their networks into open and safe platforms ready to collaborate with the entire digital ecosystem. Joining this initiative reinforces our commitment to the digital transformation of Mexico and the development of solutions that create real value in multiple industries“Said Irving Sánchez Tinajero, Director of Solutions, Altán Networks.
“As América Móvil, we actively participate in the Gateway initiative of GSMA, which supports the opening of the API interface for developers. As we have progressed in other countries, today in Mexico, through Telcel, we are promoting this forward project, which seeks to simplify the development of applications and services by facilitating access to mobile networks through API“The company announced through Telcel.
“In AT&T Mexico, we are proud to unite this initiative that places our country at the forefront of the best global innovation practices“Said Boris Velandia, vice president and general director of the wholesale business, AT&T Mexico.”GSMA Open Gateway will be key to simplifying the development of applications and services within the digital ecosystem, offering a competitive advantage in terms of safety for banks, Fintechs and, in general, for all users of the telecommunications industry in the country. “
“With GSMA Open Gateway, we are taking a firm step to open our networks as platforms that promote collaboration, efficiency and development of new business models. This initiative not only improves the experience of the end user by allowing safer and more personalized services, but also allows the industrial sector to integrate advanced digital abilities in its operations. In Telefónica, we believe that open and standardized solutions such as this are key to strengthening the digital ecosystem that our clients, and the world around them, more and more demand“Said Natalie Sánchez Lara, director of International Business and MVNos, Telefónica Movistar Mexico.
“The participation of the four Mexican operators in GSMA Open Gateway guarantees that the scale necessary for the initiative to be commercially attractive and guarantees that all users in the country can benefit from new, safer and more reliable applications. With this implementation, Latin America strengthens its position as a leading region on the global map of Gsma Open Gateway“Alejandro Adamowicz, director of Technology and Strategy for Latin America, GSMA, concluded.
Since its launch in MWC Barcelona 2023, more than 73 groups of mobile operators, representing 284 mobile networks and almost 80% of mobile connections worldwide, have joined the initiative, along with 43 channel partners. In Latin America, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru have already introduced their first API portfolio, with new markets that will join in 2025.
GSMA M360 LATAM takes place today and tomorrow in association with the Latin American Congress on Digital Transformation (CLTD) in Mexico City of Hyatt Regency in Polanco. To see the agenda and register, visit www.m360series.com/latin-america.
