At Meta Connect 2024, Mark Zuckerberg showed us for the first time Meta's first fully-functional holographic augmented reality glasses, codenamed Orion. And they look pretty cool.
To wrap up his presentation, which also featured the Meta Quest 3S, new features in the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, and updates to Meta AI including voice, Zuckerberg gave us our first look at his company’s efforts in augmented reality glasses — the culmination of what he says is a decade’s worth of work.
Even at this prototype stage, Orion looks pretty impressive. Acting just as you might expect, these glasses can provide a virtual overlay to augment what you see in the real world – this includes highlighting certain objects, allowing you to video chat with someone else's real-life self, and browse the web.
And all of this comes in pretty standard-looking specs and is lightweight, weighing less than 100 grams, although Zuckerberg himself admitted that the design is not yet finalized as they are not as fashionable as he wants them to be (and I'll be the first to agree that fashion is vital for tech wearables).
This is breaking news. As we learn more, we will update this article.
