Marvel is reportedly in early talks with the Russo brothers to direct the next two films. Avengers films.
According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), the comic book titan wants Anthony and Joe Russo to direct Avengers 5 and its sequel. THR is keen to stress that the duo have not agreed to return but, if they do sign on to helm the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) upcoming superhero team-up films, it would mark a sensational U-turn for the pair, who have regularly expressed their hesitation about directing more superhero movies together.
The Russos are the latest individuals linked to the vacant director's chair (or should I say directors' chair now?) Avengers 5which was known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Shang Chi Filmmaker Daniel Destin Cretton was initially attached to direct, but left the project in November 2023. Shawn Levy, who directed the upcoming MCU film Deadpool and Wolverinewas also in the spotlight to direct Avengers 5 as recently as June 5.

If the Russo brothers rekindle their working relationship with Marvel, their direction Avengers 5 and Avengers 6 – the latter is still expected to be called Avengers: Secret Wars – could eventually bring their tally of MCU film directors to six. The pair steered the ship in 2014 Captain America: The Winter Soldierfrom 2016 Captain America: Civil Warof 2018 Avengers: Infinity Warand that of 2019 Avengers Endgamebut have spent the last five years developing films and television shows for streaming platforms, such as Netflix and Apple TV Plus, through their production company AGBO.
The Russos' apparent involvement isn't the only recent rumor circulating online about Avengers 5In April, it was stated that Avengers 5 It would begin filming in early 2025, and that report came two months after Marvel reportedly released The Kang Dynasty Part of its title. The alleged reworking of the film's name came two months after Marvel fired Kang's former actor, Jonathan Majors; the disgraced star was found guilty of two of four sexual assault charges last December.
Russians, reunited?
As exciting as it would be to see Joe and Anthony Russo return to direct two more MCU films, I have my doubts about whether they should do it.
On the one hand, his potential return home would be a huge boon for Marvel Studios. Their previous MCU films have been critically and audience-acclaimed, with fans and critics regularly hailing that quartet as some of the best Marvel movies ever made. Let's not forget that Infinity War and Game over They’re also two of the highest-grossing films of all time, both sitting at sixth ($2.048 billion worldwide) and second ($2.797 billion worldwide) respectively on the list of highest-grossing films. Armed with their experience directing supergroup films, plus the clear evidence of how well their previous superhero films have performed, the Russos would be a safe but no less spectacular pairing to deliver more epic MCU films with the next two films. Avengers Films.
That said, they didn't do it all alone. In fact, the work of screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote the scripts for all four of the Russos' Marvel films, was just as important to the success of each film. Unless that duo also returns to write the script for each film — and they might, given the rumors that had already installed the label. Avengers 5 Writer Michael Waldron may no longer be working on it (according to Nexus Point News and The Hot Mic) – the Russos might not have the same writing chops to create two more excellent novels. Avengers movies. That's before you realize that after…Game overThe directing duo's other projects have not been resounding successes, according to Apple. Cherryfrom Netflix The gray manand Prime Video Citadel These are just three of those productions that have been criticized and/or have failed to capture the attention of viewers.
The potential return of Joe and Anthony Russo, then, is not a guaranteed win for Marvel. Of the names that have been bandied about so far, they are the ones I would most like to see in the lead role. Avengers 5 and Avengers 6But that doesn't mean I'm giving them a free pass, especially in light of the inconsistent quality of their and Marvel's productions since then. Game over.
Hopefully, with San Diego Comic-Con right around the corner, we'll find out if they're really involved when Marvel holds its main panel in Hall H on Saturday, July 27. In the meantime, you can check out all four Avengers Movies to date on Disney Plus.
