Google is about to launch a new Nest learning thermostat that will help you save money by heating your home in a more eco-friendly way according to recently leaked images.
Last week, we got our first look at the new Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) thanks to materials posted on Twitter by Arsene LupinNow, Lupin has shared even more details, including some intriguing clues about the new thermostat's features.
The new images confirm that the thermostat will have a display with rounded glass edges instead of the large, movable bezel of previous models. However, the differences are more than superficial and the new thermostat will make better use of what is actually a wall-mounted display.
Now, instead of just showing temperature settings or nothing at all, it can also display the weather forecast, time, and more. The leaked materials refer to it as a “home screen,” suggesting you might be able to choose from a variety of widgets.

Most importantly, the new thermostat will help you save energy and money with a feature called Adaptive Eco, which calculates an energy-efficient temperature for your home when you're away.
Google Nest thermostats can already automatically switch to the Eco temperature when they detect that no one is home, but you have to set a suitable temperature range yourself. It seems that the new smart thermostat will calculate the temperature on its own, which should make you feel comfortable when you get home, while using as little energy as possible.
Like its predecessors, the Google Nest Smart Thermostat (4th Gen) will “learn” the temperatures you like and automatically create a schedule based on how you turn the temperature up and down throughout the day. You can adjust this schedule through the Google Home app, but unlike previous versions, the Nest Smart Thermostat (4th Gen) will also suggest adjustments you can make to save energy.
Installation and extras
The new Nest smart thermostat will be compatible with Matter and will work with any smart home app that has it enabled. Google claims that it will be relatively quick to set up, “in about 40 minutes or less,” and while the leaked promotional materials don’t directly state this, judging by the photos it looks like it will be compatible with the same base as the previous version, allowing the new faceplate to snap into place by simply placing it on.
Last week, we learned that Google is rolling out a new version of the Nest Temperature Sensor, and according to new images, you'll receive one in the box with the new Learning Thermostat to help identify cold spots in your home.
None of these details are official yet, and we may have to wait until after the Google Pixel event on September 13 to find out more. Any device that reduces power consumption is welcome, though according to Lupin the new thermostat will cost $279 (up from $249 for the previous model), so it could be a while before you can take advantage of the savings.
