Full spoilers follow. The Lord of the Rings: The rings of powerThe first two seasons, up to and including episode 5 of season 2.
The rings of power Actor Owain Arthur has opened up about the incredibly personal memory he used to inspire season 2's heartbreaking scenes between his character, Prince Durin, and Peter Mullen's King Durin.
Speaking in advance The rings of power At the Season 2 launch on August 29, Arthur opened up about the deeply private and moving story — one he'd, in his own words, “never shared before” — that featured extreme emotional scenes between the ruler of Khazad-dûm and his heir apparent.
The sequences involving the couple have always been melodramatic, especially since they fought in The rings of power Season 1, Episode 7, about the mining of Khazad-dûm’s vast reserves of mithril. However, when the dwarf king and prince reconciled at the beginning of the second season of the hit Prime Video show, it seemed like they had repaired their relationship.
Not so. Numerous problems, including the destruction of its sunbursts, have plagued the dwarven kingdom of Khazad-dûm since the well-received Amazon series returned. Understandably desperate for a solution, the dwarves (despite Prince Durin’s suspicions) accepted Lord Celebrimbor and the mysterious Annatar’s offer of help to prevent their kingdom from falling into ruin. This led to the forging of seven of the title rings for King Durin and his fellow dwarven lords.
Unfortunately, these rings are not like the elven ones that were created in The rings of power Season 1 finale. As the show's creators told me before the Season 2 premiere, they're “more seductive and sinister” – a consequence of Annatar (the last of Sauron's disguises) being more involved in their creation.
Before The Lord of the Rings In the prequel series, the actress who plays Princess Disa, Sophia Nomvete, also suggested that “there has to be a cost” with the creation of the dwarven rings, and “a cost” there certainly is. Even though the stubbornness of the dwarven lords saves them from being completely corrupted by Sauron’s ring-based influence, the dark magic they harbor has a manipulative effect on them. In fact, it makes them greedy for gold and jewels, which is why we see King Durin become unexpectedly greedy for riches as episode 5 of season 2, titled ‘Halls of Stone’, progresses.

Knowing full well that his father has never been one for hoarding treasure, Prince Durin senses that something has changed, and clearly not for the better. What fans have glimpsed in this season’s fifth episode — especially in the heartbreaking scene where Durin III deflects his son’s concerns about the rings by officially reinstating him as the kingdom’s heir to the throne — is the beginning of another downfall in the father-son relationship. And, as Arthur told me exclusively, what happened during that sequence — as well as other emotionally impactful scenes to come in the final three episodes of Season 2 — hit him hard on a difficult, personal level.
“King Durin is a very strong anchor for Khazad-dûm and his son, and he is always offering advice,” Arthur said. “And when he starts wearing the ring, a change occurs in him. It's almost like he has Alzheimer's.” [disease]I haven't told anyone this before, but I've dealt with people who suffer from Alzheimer's and I couldn't escape that feeling of losing your father, even though he's right there in front of you.
“The Ring takes him away from Prince Durin, and though he tries, he can't tell his father, and his own king, not to wear the Ring again, but it hurts him inside to see his father change before his eyes. So that's the challenge he faces and the big change we see between them in Season 2.”
Clearly, Annatar/Sauron has a batch He has to answer for driving another wedge between Durin III and Durin IV, but he hasn't provoked the greatest ire of viewers in The rings of powerThe final episode of 's. In fact, in the wake of episode 5, fans reacted with fury to the events surrounding season 2's most slimy individual. I also won't spoil what's to come in the final three installments of one of Prime Video's best series, but rest assured, everyone is in for a much darker and more explosive ride as the season 2 finale approaches.
