Apple has officially announced iOS 18, the next version of its iPhone operating system, at WWDC 2024 (you can follow all the announcements as they happen in our WWDC 2024 live blog).
The big software update will bring significant improvements to core iPhone apps, including Mail, Messages, Photos and Wallet, later this year, and many of these updates will use the power of enhanced AI processing on Apple's device.
Mail, for example, will soon be able to categorize your emails and provide easy-to-read summaries, while the Photos app is unified into a single view comprising a photo grid and a date grid.
Messages will also soon let you react to messages using any emoji, and you'll be able to schedule messages to send at a convenient time in the future. Apple is also adding a new text format, so you'll be able to underline, strike through, and bold your messages, as well as add new text formats, like ripple effects.
Apple has not yet shared a release date for iOS 18, although the company typically begins rolling out the latest version of its operating system alongside its new iPhones. The iPhone 16 lineup will almost certainly debut in September of this year, so that's when we expect iOS 18 to be available for download on supported iPhone models.
