If you’re looking to catch up on everything that’s happened in the tech world over the past seven days, then you’ve come to the right place – we’re about to round up the biggest stories to hit TechRadar over the past week and there’s a lot to overcome.
Our dedicated reviewers have been busy, taking a close look at the Google Pixel 8 Pro phone, Meta Quest 3 VR headset, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 smartwatch, and bringing you the most comprehensive reviews of these devices you’ll find anywhere on the web.
There’s been plenty of other news too, from leaked benchmarks to new Netflix shows, so let’s dive into what’s been going on.
7. We have a hint at how powerful the Galaxy S24 will be
The Samsung Galaxy S24 series could pack a big punch in terms of performance, if the recently leaked benchmarks are to be believed. These benchmarks don’t refer to the phones themselves, but to the chipset that will likely power them.
That chipset is supposed to be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 found inside some of the best Android phones of 2023, and the processor should be unveiled later this month.
According to benchmarks, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will offer substantial leaps in CPU and GPU performance, and the Samsung Galaxy S24 could be one of the first phones to take advantage of it in 2024.
6. Kia showed off some interesting new electric car concepts
The first-ever Kia EV Day took place this week, and the automaker certainly had plenty of EV news to share: It expanded its plan to transition at least 1.6 million electric vehicles by the end of the decade.
We get updates on the EV1, EV2, EV3 and EV4, and EV5 concepts. We’re big fans of a sensible, simple naming strategy, and Kia is clearly sorted in that regard as it prepares to get these models ready for launch.
Head to the full article below to see images of Kia and find out what features these vehicles will have, features that could convince you to make one of them your next electric car purchase.
5. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 brought the best smartwatch display yet
The Apple Watch Ultra released last year was a significant upgrade to what Apple had previously offered in terms of smartwatches, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that the successor is just an incremental upgrade, although it’s still an upgrade worth considering. .
Our full review of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is now available and we’ve been busy testing everything from the feel of the watch on the wrist to the battery life it manages between charges. There’s a new processor inside, plus a handy new double-tap gesture to use.
To give you an idea of what we think of the watch, our review focuses on an incredible display and even includes the phrase “best Apple Watch ever,” although we stopped short of giving the wearable full marks.
4. Netflix’s spooky new show drew rave reviews
Spooky season is on its way, and this week included a Friday the 13th, making it an ideal time for Netflix to release its spooky new series based on the works of Edgar Allen Poe. The fall of the house of Usher.
Based on the reviews that have hit the web so far, critics love the show: it has been described as “gripping,” “joyfully terrifying,” and “some of [director Mike] “Flanagan’s best work,” so the series certainly has no shortage of fans.
The eight episodes of The fall of the house of Usher are out now and available to stream on Netflix, so you can see for yourself what all the fuss is about, although be prepared for a few scares along the way if you’re going to start watching.
The long-awaited successor to the Oculus Quest 2 has arrived, and we think the combination of features and price that the Meta Quest 3 offers make it the best VR headset for most people right now.
Technically, it is actually a mixed reality and virtual reality headset. The new pass-through technology that Meta has installed inside means that you can see the real world through the digital world, and have aliens invade your living room, etc.
Quest 3 can also play everything that was available on Quest 2, with new titles coming soon. As our Meta Quest 3 review says: “At this price, its VR and MRI performance is unbeatable, and the Quest Store’s VR software catalog is excellent.”
2. OnePlus confirmed when its foldable phone will be launched
We’re almost ready for the arrival of OnePlus’ first foldable phone, and it’s now confirmed that the OnePlus Open will launch next Thursday, October 19, the previously rumored launch date for the device.
OnePlus has teased the design of the foldable device with a handful of images, but unofficial sources continue to fill in the rest of the details. A new leak has outlined most of the phone’s specifications, and some high-resolution photos are also included.
So far, we like what we’re hearing. The OnePlus Open is expected to have the largest battery on a foldable device yet, as well as one of the thinnest designs we’ve seen in this form factor, and of course, we’ll be covering the launch this Thursday.
1. The Google Pixel 8 Pro blurred the line between phone and reality
The final review of this week’s reviews that we want to show is for Google’s new flagship phone for 2023, the Pixel 8 Pro. The phone comes with numerous AI tricks to enhance your photos and videos, which is why we describe it as blur the lines of reality.
We also call this phone the best Pixel Google has ever made, although it would be a disappointment if it weren’t, with the new Tensor G3 chipset inside and a triple-lens camera system on the back.
If you’re weighing whether this is your next phone upgrade, or just want to see if the top-tier Pixel is a serious iPhone competitor, then TechRadar’s full Google Pixel 8 Pro review is the only one you need.
