The MandalorianThe hit Star Wars show that has captivated audiences since its debut in March 2020 is coming to theaters with a film sequel.
In a shocking announcement made on StarWars.com today (January 9), it was confirmed that the popular Disney Plus series would premiere on the big screen at some point in the future. The film, which is titled The Mandalorian and GroguIt will enter full production later in 2024.

In a statement released alongside the unexpected revelation, Jon Favreau, the mastermind behind The Mandalorian – expressed considerable joy at seeing Din Djarin, the main character, and Grogu/Baby Yoda make the leap from the small screen to multiplexes and independent cinemas around the world at a date not yet announced.
“I’ve loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered in Star Wars “Two beloved new characters, and this new story fits perfectly on the big screen,” added Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be directed by Favreau, with the former Marvel actor executive producing the film alongside Kennedy and Filoni, the latter of whom was installed as creative director of Lucasfilm in November 2023.
As expected, no further details were announced about The Mandalorian and Grogubut the StarWars.com article confirms that it will be the first in a batch of new Star Wars films that are already in development at Lucasfilm.
That contingent includes the previously announced High Republic-era film Indiana Jones 5 and logan director James Mangold, a post-Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker offering Ms. Marvel‘s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Jedi Master Rey Skywalker, and Filon’s ensemble film which will bring back characters from The Mandalorian, Star Wars: Ahsokaand potentially Star Wars: Skeleton Crew together to fight Grand Admiral Thrawn and his Imperial Remnants.
