- Hinge is using AI to help with prompts
- Won't write them for you
- There are different levels of guidance.
If the thought of creating the perfect dating profile scares you, Hinge has an AI solution. The popular dating app has launched a new feature called Prompt Feedback that uses AI to guide you to write better responses to profile requests. The company believes that AI assistance can improve people's responses to show up or at least be less basic and boring.
According to Hinge, prompts are 47% more likely to lead to dates than photo likes, but more than half of people surveyed on Hinge admitted they don't know how to craft good responses. Prompt Feedback's AI evaluates a dater's profile responses and offers personalized advice on how to modify them for maximum impact.
The AI is honed with insights from Hinge's team of behavioral scientists. In particular, it doesn't rewrite your answer or make one up for you. It simply suggests ways to think about your answer and how to make it better, more detailed, and more likely to attract potential romantic partners. It's a movie's supportive best friend who tells you, “Maybe skip the hamster joke from your childhood and mention your love of hiking instead.”
AI romance
The feature is located in the settings menu, where users can review comments privately. Users will receive one of three levels of guidance: a simple “Big answer” if the answer is already correct, “Try a small change” to make a small adjustment, or “Dig a little deeper,” which is the polite way we AI has the ability to say, “You can do better than 'I like long walks on the beach.'”
Hinge isn't the only one applying AI to dating profiles. Tinder uses an artificial intelligence feature that can help select profile photos, while Grindr is developing its own digital companion. Meanwhile, Bumble offers photo help and artificial intelligence to help users design their complete profile and get conversations between users off to a good start.
Writing a good profile takes effort, and dating app fatigue is real. For some users, the idea of AI criticizing their efforts may seem intimidating or unnecessary. For others, this could be the romantic push they need. Unlike the harsh criticism you might receive from a sibling or a brutally honest friend, this feedback is completely optional. But if you're willing to get some constructive advice, the tool is there to help you.
