Google's Gemini Live artificial intelligence assistant has a new range of voices to communicate with Android users. The ten new voices each have a unique way of speaking, linked to personalities and accents.
Additionally, in keeping with Gemini's astronomical theme, all of the voices are named after constellations, stars, or star-related phenomena, such as Orion, Capella, and Nova, respectively.
Voices were initially exclusive to Gemini Advanced subscribers, but are now available to all users, making them more accessible and fitting with Google’s efforts to make Gemini a part of every user’s experience. Google claims that the voice engine used for voices makes them more emotionally expressive and able to handle interactions in a way that is closer to human conversation.
No matter which voice you choose, the AI will be able to speak and complete tasks at the same time. And if you didn't understand something the AI said, it will save a text transcript so you can review it or even reset it.
You can now explore up to 10 different voices with Gemini Live *and* change your selection at any time. Listen here or in the app, and let us know which ones are your favorites in the replies. pic.twitter.com/ZflSi7n4NRSeptember 17, 2024
Gemini lives forever
It's worth noting that Gemini Live voices are being rolled out just as OpenAI plans to announce significant improvements to ChatGPT's advanced voice mode. ChatGPT in voice mode currently struggles with longer conversations and has other limitations that Gemini Live and its larger context window don't have. It hasn't yet been revealed whether the updated advanced voice mode will include as many voice options.
Google’s expansion of Gemini Live and the introduction of new voices help highlight how Google wants Gemini to feel like more than just a Google Assistant, but a personalized assistant that adapts to your preferences. Making these free will likely enhance Gemini’s place in people’s lives, especially as the company rolls out new integrations and connections with Google products.
