It's fair to say that Google hasn't been shy about trying to sneak its Gemini AI bot into just about every app possible, and all signs point to the Gmail app for Android being the latest to get an infusion of Gemini's AI magic.
This comes from well-known tipster AssembleDebug and Android Authority, and is based on an APK (Android Application Package) teardown. Basically, it means digging through the application code to find features that have not yet been enabled for the user.
One of those features is now a Gemini button in the toolbar at the top. Tapping it will bring up a message box for Gemini, so you might want the AI bot to summarize some of your emails or compose a reply to a message in your inbox.
This was actually first spotted in April, although the toolbar button was not visible at the time. It also matches some of the features that paying Google Workspace users can already get in Gmail, so it's not a big surprise to see it appear for more people.
AI Summaries
Gemini's AI can clearly be helpful when sifting through long emails and conversation threads, picking out key points as necessary, although it's important to remember that AI is still not 100% reliable and, in fact, may never be. be.
You're on safer ground when AI summarizes instead of creating text, because it doesn't have to invent anything new. However, there is still no guarantee that Gemini AI won't miss something vital in one of its summaries, because it doesn't understand the meaning of a group of words or a sentence.
If you really need to be precise and on top of something in your inbox, you might as well read it yourself. Humans can make mistakes too, of course, but you understand the people you're emailing and what they're emailing about; You're not just weighing the probabilities of word combinations.
The Android Authority team also got Gemini AI to change the tone of draft emails and explain how to complete tasks in Gmail. However, as of now, there is no word on when the feature might be available to users.
