Final Fantasy 8 Director Yoshinori Kitase has said that if Square Enix were to remake the game, they would change the battle system.
Speaking in an interview with IGN, the series producer explained that he would “rework” the battle system known as Junction after noticing how some players struggled to understand the mechanics when it was originally released in 1999.
“I think you'll remember we had the Junction system in Final Fantasy 8Kitase said. “And the thing about that system was that the enemies leveled up according to the level of the player. And obviously you had to use the Junction system and how to customize it to overcome the challenge there. And I think that was very difficult.” system for some people to enter. Depending on the players' abilities, sometimes they just didn't find the best way to do it.”
Kitase went on to say that he would like to revisit this aspect specifically if a remake were to be made, and make the “level of difficulty and accessibility” for some players “much better balanced” overall.
“So I think that's what I would consider the most if I wanted to remake it,” he said.
Square Enix is currently focusing on its Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, whose second part, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, is ready to launch on February 29 for PlayStation 5. There is no official information about a new version of Final Fantasy 8But even if it were confirmed, Kitase says that recreating that level of RPG content today is “not something you can take lightly.”
He added: “It's such a huge investment of time and effort that we really have to think long and hard before undertaking any kind of project like that.”
