Several developers have spoken out against this year's Global Game Jam (GGJ) list of diversifiers and sponsors, which includes two AI tool websites.
A Polish game developer, Sosowski, decided Twitter/X to express his disdain for the latest list of diversifiers in GGJ. “[I] I was not expecting [GGJ] being so deaf,” the developer admitted.
Another independent game developer, Rami Ismail, explained in Twitter/X that while “I understand the need for sponsors to put on an event that's trying to do good, I really get it, I get it. However, this is an incredibly unfortunate example and I'm not sure that any amount of revenue can offset the damage to reputation here. , especially among the student and developer audiences that GGJ serves.”
Global Game Jam is a non-profit organization that was created with the goal of providing independent developers with a space to create and showcase their games and designs. It is a place where many developers can come together to experiment and meet new people in a safe environment.
Diversifiers are also an important part of GGJ as they act as sponsors of the event. “Diversifiers are a great way to add more fun or a challenge to your improv weekend,” explains the official GGJ website. “Sometimes they can be very useful for narrowing your scope or refining your ideas. It can help your game stand out from the crowd and you can choose up to 4 when you submit them.” However, the website goes on to explain that these are entirely optional additions that you can use and add to your GGJ game alongside the main focus of the theme.
This year, developers can use two artificial intelligence tools in GGJ. The first is ReadSpeaker, an AI plugin that can add “dynamic voice dialogue at runtime, improve player immersion, and make your games more inclusive,” according to the GGJ website. There is also Leonardo.Ai, a tool that can enhance or generate 3D images and textures using AI.
One of the biggest creators of free indie game resources, Kenny, spoke out against these tools on Twitter/X: “I think the worst thing about Global Game Jams' questionable sponsors is that the event is held in schools and attracts a lot of young developers. Give them proper resources, please.”
